Cycles of indebtedness in India

In August and September of 2016, I traveled to India to explore why so many farmers are trapped in debt. After poring over data in urban Chennai, I headed to the field and heard farmers’ stories of an uphill battle. Without insurance, farmers often rely on loans when a drought wipes out their crops. But credit access is a poor risk management strategy.

This research was done in conjunction with the Stanford Center for International Development and Institute for Financial Management and Research.
